Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS is a common disorder of the digestive system that causes abdominal pain, bloating, cramping, altered bowel patterns such as constipation and diarrhoea or alternating between the two extremes.

If you have IBS you may experience many different symptoms in the one day such as
diarrhoea, an increased urge to go to the toilet and a feeling of incomplete evacuation with very firm stools or constipation. It is also possible that you may experience rectal bleeding and haemorrhoids from excessive straining when passing a stool, it is important to let your practitioner know if this occurs, as it can also be a sign of more serious conditions.

Many estimates place the incidence of IBS at between 25-30% of the population. IBS is a chronic disorder that can come and go throughout a person's life.
There are many factors that play a role in the development of IBS. These include:

Food allergies or food intolerance
• Antibiotic use
• Bacterial or fungal overgrowth in the bowel
• Physical or emotional stress
• Inabaility to digest food properly due to insufficient digestive enzyme production
• Genetic predisposition

Probiotics are friendly bacteria, which when taken internally have beneficial effects on your gut and immune function. Choosing the correct Probiotic to use for your particular digestive problem is extremely important as each strain of probiotic bacteria has been shown to have different beneficial effects on the gut. Some are more suited to people with food allergy or
diarrhoea  while others are more suited to people with constipation or candida.
